Mandatory Registration for Bird Keepers Introduced in the UK
HallMark Veterinary & Compliance Services highlights a significant update for bird keepers in England and Wales.
From 1 October, registration becomes mandatory for all bird keepers, including those with just a single bird. This new regulation, mandated by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), aims to bolster the poultry sector's defense against avian influenza and other diseases. The registration will also facilitate more effective disease surveillance and control measures.
Scottish bird keepers have a slightly later deadline, until 1 December, to comply with similar registration requirements. The move is designed to ensure all bird keepers are well-informed of the necessary precautions to safeguard the health of their birds. This includes backyard flock owners, birds of prey handlers, and pigeon fanciers. However, the regulation exempts caged pet birds like parrots and budgies kept entirely indoors.
UK authorities, including Ele Brown, the deputy chief veterinary officer, emphasise that this initiative will significantly enhance disease monitoring and prevention capabilities. The British Poultry Council supports this registration as a critical tool for improving communication between bird keepers and government agencies, especially important as the colder months approach.
The recent declaration of Britain's freedom from highly pathogenic avian influenza as of 29 March 2024 underscores the importance of stringent measures and preparedness to prevent future outbreaks.
